Despite the low price, Coats Epic is an excellent sewing thread with superb quality. The reason why I can keep the low price is because I buy directly from Coats and don't need to go through a costly chain. Additionally I run the webshop alone and have very low expenses like rent, administration etc.
Epic actually have better specifications than Mara. It's both stronger and more elastic. Though we're talking about merely 3% difference, but it's still a better thread. Aesthetically Epic is not as smooth as Mara, where the latter one is in a league of it's own. On non-visible seams it doesn't mean anything at all.
If you're used to random, noname threads then Epic would be like heaven for you. Many problems and issues with your sewing machine might in fact be due to bad sewing threads. Sewing thread is extremely important for a seam. You simply can't sew without a thread! So your choice of sewing thread really makes a big difference.
While you may save a few cents you'll suffer from more frequent thread breaking, uneven seams and trouble with the sewing machine. Most of us sew for fun in our free time and bad threads shouldn't ruin the joy.
Random "noname" thread: € 1.6 for 1000m, Coats Epic: € 2.4 for 1000m, consumption in this example: 50m thread.
Savings: (€ 2.4 - € 1.6) / 1000m * 50m = € 0.04 = 4¢
